News:2/18 Florida Update Day 2 Saturday - Game One - SLAP (Squad 1996) vs. Quebec SLAPs second day of play at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex started at 7:00 am with a 7:50 a.m. 1996 squad against the Quebec. It was another challenging game with the Canadians really pressing at every opportunity. The 1996 squad had to wake up and fight. At the half the score was SLAP 0 and Quebec 13. Then in the third period Alvaro G. scored a point. The game ended with SLAP 1 and Quebec 23. Saturday - Game Two - SLAP (93 Squad) vs. Riptides At 12:00 the SLAP (1993 Squad) took on the Riptides, a Florida team. It was a tough game. Suffice to say that Florida based teams are composed of select players who train five days a week with access to pools in a good climate. They are also coached by a very tough coach who I believe it is likely chews nails right after she has eaten her young. The SLAP team worked hard and fought a good fight. At the half it was SLAP 1 and Riptides 12. The second half was much like the same with the final score SLAP 1 and Riptides 20. Game 3 SLAP (1996) vs Encantada It was sort of looked like it was going to storm in the afternoon. However the clouds blocked the intense sun which had being beating down on us and making it feel warmer than 81. (The previous comments are superfluous to the sports report but do convey the weather conditions that are being enjoyed.). Another tough game against the South Florida Latin team (and I do not mean Vene, vidi, vici). SLAP fought this one and really worked despite being very tired - it was showing. However they scored three goals in the first half while the opposing team scored twelve. Alvaro G. Got two goals and Mo M. got one. The 1996 squad kept at it and the second half had Alvaro and Henry B. each scoring one. The final score was SLAP 5 and the other team 24. Below is a photo of the post game debrief with Coach Cory, Taylor and Colleen - all of whom must have tired brains and voices. Can you spot the sleepy polo player? I told you they were tired. Game 4 - SLAP (1993 Squad) vs. ? I have not received a report about the outcome of the SLAP (1993 Squad) which played this evening. Between games the squads split and tried to relax. So 1993 visited the beach while Game 3 took place. During Game 4 the 1996 squad went to the beach and ate at a great restaurant which Coach Joe located. Tomorrow is the last day of the tournament and both teams will have one game. They should be proud of their hard work and hanging tough in tough battles. Thanks again to Coach Cory, Taylor, Colleen, Joe and to Cathy Milton for her organization. Mark Sent from my iPad 2/17: Florida Update Day 1 Greetings from Coral Springs: It has been a long day at the South Florida International Water Polo Tournament. The day started with the 1996 group jumping into the water at 6:30 a.m. (that would be 5:30 a.m for St. Louis based bodies) for a 7:00 a.m. game. They faced off against the Navy team from Maryland. It was a tough game - for SLAP. Very strong team and at the half it was SLAP 0 and Navy 16. The final was SLAP 0 and Navy 28. Hopefully Navy wins the whole thing then at least we would be beat by the best. The 1993 group faced off against Blau Weiss, a German team, at 12:50 p.m. Another hard battle but much closer match. At the half it was SLAP 1 and Blau Weiss 5. SLAP fought hard with the final score SLAP 3 and Blau Weiss 7. (sorry about not providing the scorers for SLAP I was not keeping good notes at that point and I am not a sports journalist. I hope to get that information from Coach Joe who has maintained the official books) At 5:00 SLAP 1996 battled the South Florida 1996 team - big boys for their age. One of the mother's from South Florida told me that they practice four to five times a week and must swim competitively if they want to play polo. It was a tough game and at the half the score was SLAP 0 and South Florida 12. Taylor, Colleen and Cory actively coached the team and things began to happen in the fourth quarter. The team really worked hard and aggressively pressed the competition. Henry scored a point and Ian scored a point to bring the final score SLAP 2 and South Florida 15. The SLAP 1993 team is playing right now and I am waiting word on the outcome. Update to follow. Everything is good - it was 82 degrees today and beautiful. At the hotel and the restaurants you find water polo players and player families from Germany, Hungary, Puerto Rico, Canada, Maryland, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, California, Florida and Missouri! I believe everyone will sleep well tonight and the games start early tomorrow morning. Thanks to Taylor, Colleen, Joe and Cory for all of their dedication. A big congratulations to the SLAP players for their hard work and persistence. Good luck tomorrow! Mark 2/13: Both the Ladue and U. City School Districts have closed canceled all after school activities. All SLAP practices for 2/13 have been canceled. 2/12 Thanks to everyone for a great winter season! Our SLAP 93 team finished 6-1, SLAP 18 Blue finished 3-3-1 and SLAP 16 Blue finished 2-4. Although SLAP 18 Gold, 16 Gold & U14 went winless, all the players played very hard and worked well together. Good luck to all the high school players this spring. The Kuppa was a positive experience giving our older players a chance to lead & coach while the younger players got a chance to play with and against some of the best players in St. Louis. SLAP 1 managed our only win of the weekend. Congratulations to our girls team that won the Lindendwood Invite going 4-0 on the weekend, defeating host Lindenwood 9-6, SLU 10-5, Illinois State 10-8 and Wash U 10-4. Special thanks to Scott Summers (Danielle's father) for donating team bags to the team. There are only 3 practice days left in the winter season. Tomorrow 2/13 is Parents vs Players at the U14 practice. With Tuesday being Valentine's Day, the U18 team has requested a "pass" on Burrito Night 2012 so they can spend the dinner hour with that special someone. High school girls interested in the Puerto Rico Easter Tournament should email Miguel ASAP at eiznof@aol.com. Team departs 4/5 & returns 4/9. This tournament is hosted by the U19 Puerto Rican Women's National Team to prepare for the U19 Jr. Pan Am Championships this August in Canada. Ground transportation to and from the San Juan airport to the Olympic Residential Training Center in Salinas is provided. All athlete will receive free housing at the facility. All meals will be provided at the training center, and these are comped, as well. SLAP players will only be responsible for their airfare and airfare for Coach Colleen.
